THE MONICA ROBERTS COLLECTION: HELP

There are several ways that you can navigate your way around this collection.

• Search

  This is the basic search facility. It allows you to search by the correspondent's name by choosing from a drop-down list. You will then be brought into the database, which will list every records for that correspondent, with a brief description, a date and (if supplied) his location. If you click on Image, this will bring you to the scanned image of the letter or postcard.

• Full Text Search

  This allows you to search the entire collection using any word. It returns the complete record for every hit, with a link to the scanned image of the letter or postcard.

• Browse

  The Browse facility allows you to search the collection month-by-month, or by the correspondent's location, or to start from the first record, the original rules for the 'Band of Helpers' written by Monica Roberts and work your way through the entire collection.

  Transcription Conventions:

  • Text was transcribed exactly as seen on page, even if words were misspelt or abbreviated. However the correct spelling of words and full text of abbreviations was added in [] in order to enhance comprehension and search functions
  • The transcriber occasionally inserted notes regarding formatting of original letters/pages in square brackets [ ]. E.G: [page torn, text missing]
  • The transcriber used [...?] to indicate words and passages which were illegibile or which they were unsure about . e.g [McCarthy?]
